We made it home in one piece -- and healthy!
Thank you for checking in on our trip. It was fun.
I might be adding more pictures as I get time.
Happy New Year!!
Central America, December 2010
Jim and Vickie have the fabulous opportunity to join our dear friend, Ciel Duke, on an "enrichment" cruise this December. The "enrichment" is what Semester at Sea, from the University of Virginia, does between semesters. http://www.semesteratsea.org/voyages/enrichment-voyages/december-2010.php shows our itinerary, and a lot about what we will be learning. We will have the honor of being in the presence of Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

January 3, 2011. At Sea.
Today is the last day of our voyage. We are attending lectures, packing, planning for the New Year, and thinking about what we just witnessed. Great trip. We will be home on January 5.

January 2, 2011. Cozumel.
Our last port before Ft. Lauderdale -- Cozumel. We visited Chankanaab Nature Park. Wandered through the botanical gardens. Saw iguanas, sea lions, manatees, dolphins, colorful fishes . . .

December 31. Belize.
We had a lovely New Years Eve riding on a boat through the rain forest. The forest was lush. By the time we got on the boat it was late morning -- getting too warm for monkeys and birds. Here are some quick shots from the river.
Both sides of the river were lush, lush green. |
Unfortunately, the monkeys were pretty warm by the time we saw them. They were quiet and calm. |
The iguanas love the sun, so we saw lots of them. Flashy males . . . |
This is a cactus tree. A cactus plant grows up the branches -- no predators in these trees. |
This little guy watched us have lunch. |
New Years Eve lunch at the Smokey Mermaid. We were up at tree levecl. |

December 30. Guatemala and Main Land Honduras.
We went back over the country boundaries to a Honduran "park" with waterfalls. We got into extreme hiking -- straight uphill! Had lunch and then spent an hour on a bridge workers were rebuilding.
Resting under a big banana tree. |
Banana field. The plastic bags protect the bananas from pests and provide a microclimate. |
Tough hike, going straight up. |
Down was better. |
Basic Honduran lunch (take out). Fried plantains, fish, and shrimp. Rice and beans and some vegetables. |
Coffee bean. |
Coffee beans on the tree. |
Jamie always finds new friends. |
Waiting for the bridge to be built so we can go across. |
Banana field with the gorgeous green mountains behind. |
More textiles while we head through the terminal to the ship. |
